Adblock Plus 1.12.3 for Safari released · 2016-09-21 13:17 by Dave Barker

Install Adblock Plus 1.12.3 for Safari (Safari 6 or higher required)

This is an emergency release, only for Safari, which fixes compatibility with Safari 10. Starting with Safari 10 Technical Preview Release 11, Apple made a change which broke Adblock Plus. Safari 10 was then released before our fix (issue 4150) could be released normally. As a result we are forced to perform this emergency release.

Builds for Chrome and Opera were generated as well. But since there were no changes compared to the previous release, we didn’t upload these to their respective web stores.

Safari-only changes
  • Adapted Event.initEvent() calls for compatibility with Safari 10 (issue 4150).

Adblock Plus 1.12 for Chrome, Opera and Safari released · 2016-06-01 15:03 by Sebastian Noack

Install Adblock Plus 1.12 for ChromeInstall Adblock Plus 1.12 for OperaInstall Adblock Plus 1.12 for Safari (Safari 6 or higher required)

This release features experimental Safari Content Blocking support. So if you’re on Safari 9, you can try out the new (faster) blocking mechanism now by enabling it in the options. But please read the announcement first; as that feature is still experimental and Content Blockers have some limitations, there are some caveats. However, Content Blockers will eventually completely replace the old mechanism we relied on so far on Safari.

There also have been some bug fixes and other improvements for all platforms which are listed below, and some changes under the hood which aren’t visible to the user.

Changes
  • Improved performance of element hiding, reducing page load times (issue 235, issue 4038, issue 4036).
  • Fixed a regression, introduced with the previous release, which caused the Adblock Warning Removal List to not be added anymore (issue 3772).
  • Prevent websites from circumventing element hiding by removing or disabling the stylesheet (issue 3699).
  • Prevent websites from showing previously blocked elements (issue 3840).
Chrome/Opera-only changes
Safari-only changes
  • Added experimental support for Safari Content Blocking (see above, issue 3687).
  • Fixed: Wrong domain was whitelisted by icon menu after navigating through the history (issue 3924).

Experimental Safari Content Blocking support · 2016-05-18 14:54 by Dave Barker

With Safari 9 Apple announced support for Content Blocking Extensions, with the aim of providing a more efficient way for Safari extensions to block adverts. (At the same time they announced the depreciation of the old method Safari extensions use to block adverts, implying it is likely to be removed from future Safari versions.) Since then we have been working on adding experimental Content Blocking support to Adblock Plus (issue 3687). It will be available as of Adblock Plus 1.12 for Safari and is now in the developments builds as of 1.11.0.1602.

Content Blocking can be enabled from the options page for supported versions of Adblock Plus and Safari:

But wait! Before you give it a try, here are some things you should know:

  • Safari disables the old method we use to block adverts when Content Blocking is enabled. This means that after disabling Content Blocking you will need to restart Safari.
  • To support Content Blocking we translate Adblock Plus filters to Content Blocking rules. While we’re working to improve this it is still a fairly slow process, you may notice a small delay when enabling Content Blocking or when adjusting your filters and subscriptions. (Each change causes the Content Blocking rules to be regenerated.)
  • Adblock Plus filters do not translate perfectly to Content Blocking rules, which means that some filters simply won’t work at all and some other filters may not work exactly as before.
  • Safari 9 has a limit of 50,000 Content Blocking rules, causing an error to be shown when exceeded: “Extension compilation failed: Too many rules in JSON array.”. If you see this error try disabling some filter list subscriptions. We are working to further compress the Content Blocking rules generated and also hope that Apple will increase this limit in future versions of Safari.

Adblock Plus 1.11 for Chrome, Opera and Safari released · 2016-03-08 17:44 by Sebastian Noack

Install Adblock Plus 1.11 for ChromeInstall Adblock Plus 1.11 for OperaInstall Adblock Plus 1.11 for Safari (Safari 6 or higher required)

This release features the new developer tools panel which shows blockable items along with applied filters, and provides an easy way to create new filters for these items, on Chrome and Opera.

Another big change in this release: The “Block element” dialog is no longer injected into the page, but opened as a popup on Chrome and Opera, and as a new tab on Safari. This solved a couple issues, most notably a way that allowed websites to reliably detect whether Adblock Plus is installed.

Other changes
  • Significant improvements to the popup blocking mechanism on Chrome and Opera, in order to address some corner cases which have been exploited by some websites (issue 3651).
  • Restricted the data send by the uninstall page. We respect your privacy! (issue 3649)
  • Fixed: CSS property filters weren’t applied correctly when comma-separated lists of selectors were involved (issue 3654).
  • Fixed: The “Block element” feature didn’t consider $genericblock exception rules (issue 3620, issue 3636).

Adblock Plus 1.10.2 for Safari released · 2016-02-11 15:28 by Sebastian Noack

Install Adblock Plus 1.10.2 for Safari (Safari 6 or higher required)

We just updated Apple’s certificate used in the Safari builds to make sure that Adblock Plus can still be installed when the old certificate expires. And as a result we had to release a new version. Other than the updated certificate, the build is completely identical to the previous release.

Builds for Chrome and Opera were generated as well. But since there were no changes compared to the previous release, we didn’t upload these to their respective web stores.

Install Adblock Plus 1.10.1 for ChromeInstall Adblock Plus 1.10.1 for OperaInstall Adblock Plus 1.10.1 for Safari (Safari 6 or higher required)

This is an emergency bugfix release, fixing a regression that was introduced in the previous release and broke compatibility with Chrome 37, Opera 24, and earlier versions (issue 3580).

Besides that and some changes under the hood, this release fixes the following minor bugs:

  • Subscription links caused the options page to be opened twice (issue 3153).
  • The “Block element” option wasn’t shown in icon popup while page was loading (issue 3472).

This update adds the new CSS property filter syntax which should give filter list authors an additional tool against the circumvention of Adblock Plus. We have also created a page which will be shown when Adblock Plus is uninstalled. We are hoping to gain insight into the overall user experience and what we can improve.

Changes
  • Added support for the new CSS property filter syntax (issue 2397).
  • Improved how the first run page looks on smaller screens (issue 1292).
Chrome/Opera-only changes
Safari-only changes
  • Avoid matching web requests with the type OTHER when using the $font filter option (issue 3454).

Since many websites rely on advertising revenue, Adblock Plus's default settings encourage the use of nonintrusive advertising rather than annoying, irrelevant ads. To accomplish this, we've established a set of strict guidelines known as the Acceptable Ads initiative. Together with our users and third-party contributors, we have defined acceptable ads and outlined appropriate ad placement and size. Ads meeting these criteria are visible. You can, however, disable this feature at any time and browse ad-free.

Disable Tracking

With every browsing session, there are multiple firms tracking your online activity and browsing history. Hundreds of ad agencies are tracking your every move. With Adblock Plus, you can easily disable most tracking and browse the web more anonymously.

According to Stanford University research, the EasyPrivacy tracking protection filters are the most efficient of all available tracking protection solutions, and can extend the tracking protection of Adblock Plus.

Disable Malware Domains

If your computer is slow at startup or riddled with pop-ups, it may be infected with malware. Computers infected with malware are vulnerable to all types of cyber attacks, including stolen identity. Infected computers can also be used to send spam emails or attack other computers or servers, stealing passwords, social security numbers, personal documents and credit card information.

By default, Adblock Plus provides some malware protection, but it can extend this protection by being configured to also block domains known to spread malware. This helps protect your computer against viruses, Trojan horses, worms, adware and spyware.

To enable this feature, open this dialogue and click Add.

Disable Social Media Buttons

Buttons used to share content on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and others are placed on almost every website that you visit. Even if you don't click them, these buttons send requests to the social network's servers which then uses the information to create a profile based on your browsing habits.

Adblock Plus can disable social media buttons from websites, ensuring that social networks cannot create a profile based on the websites you visit.

To enable this feature, open this dialogue and click Add.

Allowing acceptable ads in Adblock Plus

This page is under review as management of the Acceptable Ads initiative has been transferred to the independent Acceptable Ads Committee.

What is this about?

Adblock Plus is a tool that lets users block ads. Since ads fuel a lot of the content we enjoy for free online, finding common ground seemed to make sense. We asked our users about this and they overwhelmingly agreed.

So starting in 2011, in consultation with our users, we decided to propose a compromise. Because we share a vision with the majority of our users that not all ads are equally annoying, the Acceptable Ads initiative was created. It allows advertisers and publishers who have agreed to make ads that abide by user-generated criteria to be whitelisted. Users can support this less extreme version of ad blocking by allowing the Acceptable Ads option to remain enabled. To browse completely ad-free, users can disable the option.

The Acceptable Ads initiative is beneficial because it encourages the ad industry to pursue less intrusive ad formats, thus having a positive impact on the Internet as a whole. It also provides us with a viable source of revenue, paid only by larger participants in the Acceptable Ads initiative, which we need in order to be able to administer and maintain the program and continue development of a free product.

We believe that this initiative is a sustainable middle ground between the user's choice to use ad blockers and the continued need to support free online content with advertisements. In general, an Acceptable Ad is a non-animated ad, clearly labeled as such, that does not interrupt reading flow. It is important to note that these criteria try to reflect the ongoing discussions between our users, publishers, advertisers and us. As previously announced, in 2017 eyeo / Adblock Plus transferred management of the Acceptable Ads initiative to an independent group of people, the Acceptable Ads Committee.

To ensure transparency and fairness, the following rules have and will always apply to everyone without exceptions:

  • Participants cannot pay to avoid the criteria. Every ad has to comply with the criteria.
  • For transparency reasons, we add all Acceptable Ads to our forum to provide our community with the opportunity to submit feedback. We greatly value feedback and read all comments.
  • Adblock Plus users are valuable to us and we listen to them. If, for valid reasons, any Acceptable Ads proposal is rejected by our community, the ad(s) will be removed from our whitelist.

We are able to keep our open source product free by charging large entities a fee for whitelisting services. For the other roughly 90 percent of our partners, these services are offered free of charge.

Do you think this is a good idea? Show your support by signing our Acceptable Ads Manifesto.

What is an Acceptable Ad?

Ads that shall be treated as Acceptable Ads have to comply with the following criteria:

General criteria

Placement

Ads must not disrupt the user's natural reading flow. Such ads must be placed on top, side or below the Primary Content .

Distinction

Ads should always be recognizable as ads, and distinguishable from all other content (e.g. are not hiding the label, are not misleading users into thinking an ad is part of the primary content). Ads should be clearly marked with the word "advertisement" or its equivalent.

Size

Individual ad-size requirements depend on the placement of the ad:

  • When placed above the primary content, the maximum height of an ad should be 200px.
  • When placed on the side of the primary content, the maximum width of an ad should be 350px.
  • When placed below the primary content, the maximum height of an ad should be 400px.

Ads must always leave sufficient space for the Primary Content on the common screen size of 1366x768 for desktop, 360x640 for mobile devices and 768x1024 for tablets.

All ads that are placed above the fold (the portion of the web page visible in the browser window when the page first loads under the common screen size), must not occupy in total more than 15 percent of the visible portion of the web page. If placed below the fold, ads must not occupy in total more than 25 percent of the visible portion of the webpage.

Specific criteria

Text ads

Text ads designed with excessive use of colors and/or other elements to grab attention are not permitted.

Image ads

Static image ads may qualify as acceptable, according to an evaluation of their unobtrusiveness based on their integration on the webpage.

In-feed ads

For ads in lists and feeds, the general criteria differ depending on:

  • Placement requirementsAds are permitted in between entries and feeds.
  • Size requirementsIn-feed ads are permitted to take up more space, as long as they are not substantially larger than other elements in the list or feed.
Search ads

For search ads - ads displayed following a user-initiated search query - the criteria differ depending on:

  • Size requirementsSearch ads are permitted to be larger and take up additional screen space.
Ads on pages with no primary content

Only text ads are allowed. For webpages without any primary content (e.g. error or parking pages), the criteria differ depending on:

  • Placement requirementsNo placement limitations.
  • Size requirementsNo size limitations.
Other Acceptable Ads formats?

Are your ads displayed on alternative screens, or are you convinced that you have an innovative Acceptable Ads format which doesn't fit the ads outlined above? Let us know!

The 'Primary Content' is defined as (based on Mozilla's description of the <main> HTML element): The Primary Content consists of content that is directly related to, or expands upon the central topic of a document or the central functionality of an application. This content should be unique to the document, excluding any content that is repeated across a set of documents such as sidebars, navigation links, copyright information, site logos, and search forms (unless, of course, the document's main function is a search form).

The 'common screen size' for desktop is 1366x768, based on data from StatCounter.

The 'common screen size' for mobile is 360x640, based on data from StatCounter.

The 'common screen size' for tablets is 768x1024, based on data from StatCounter.

What is not considered an Acceptable Ad?

The following types of ads are currently unacceptable , and cannot be considered for inclusion on the whitelist:

  • Ads that visibly load new ads if the Primary Content does not change
  • Ads with excessive or non user-initiated hover effects
  • Animated ads
  • Autoplay-sound or video ads
  • Expanding ads
  • Generally oversized image ads
  • Interstitial page ads
  • Overlay ads
  • Overlay in-video ads
  • Pop-ups
  • Pop-unders
  • Pre-roll video ads
  • Rich media ads (e.g. Flash ads, Shockwave ads, etc.)

Except when the user intentionally interacts with the ad (e.g. clicks on the ad to see a video ad playing).

Why is this feature enabled by default?

Unfortunately, this is the only way to accomplish the goals described above. If the majority of Adblock Plus users have this function activated, advertisers will have the incentive to produce better ads.

But I hate all ads!

No problem, you can disable this feature at any time:

Chrome, Maxthon, Opera, Safari - Click the Adblock Plus icon and select Options. Uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.

Firefox - Click the Adblock Plus icon and select Filter preferences. Uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.

Internet Explorer - Click the Adblock Plus icon and select Settings. Uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.

Adblock Browser for Android - Open Settings, tap Ad blocking > Configure Acceptable Ads and uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.

Adblock Browser for iOS - Open Settings, tap Adblock Plus > Acceptable Ads and uncheck Allow some nonintrusive ads.

Adblock Plus for iOS - Open Adblock Plus for iOS from the Home screen, tap the Settings icon > Acceptable Ads and uncheck Allow some nonintrusive ads.

Will all "acceptable" ads be unblocked?

No. Unfortunately, it isn't technically possible to recognize ads that meet our Acceptable Ads criteria automatically. We have agreements with some websites and advertisers which stipulate that only advertising matching our criteria will be displayed when Adblock Plus users visit these particular sites. These ads will be unblocked (i.e. added to the Acceptable Ads exception list which is enabled per default). No applicant will be favored or treated differently, and no one can buy their way onto the whitelist. Everyone must comply with the criteria and everyone goes through the same process before the ads qualify as "acceptable".

What if an ad is allowed, but doesn't meet the requirements?

Please report it. If an advertiser abuses its placement on the exception list, we can always remove it from the list.

How can I see what you are allowing?

The Allow nonintrusive advertising checkbox simply adds one more filter subscription to your list. You can view the filters here. Also, the special treatment of this filter subscription - which was added for reasons of usability - can be disabled by going to "about:config" and changing the extensions.adblockplus.subscriptions_exceptionscheckbox preference to false. This will allow you to view the filters for this subscription as usual.

Do you have questions or suggestions concerning this list? Feel free to get in touch with the community in our forum or contact us directly via email.

How can I get my website whitelisted?

The process of getting your ads whitelisted takes about 10 working days once the ads adhere to the Acceptable Ads criteria:

  1. If your website has ads that comply with the Acceptable Ads criteria, simply fill out this form.
  2. Someone from Eyeo, the company behind Adblock Plus, will contact you to determine the exact ads, and check whether they comply with our criteria.
  3. After you have made any necessary changes, both sides sign an agreement.
  4. We submit the whitelisting proposal in the forum and the ads are whitelisted at the same time. The topic will stay open in order for the community to declare concerns if or when the candidate does not meet the requirements.

Do Adblock Plus users really want this feature?

The results of our user survey say yes. According to the survey, only 25 percent of Adblock Plus users are strictly against all advertising. They can disable the feature and browse completely ad-free. The other 75 percent replied that they would accept some advertising to help support websites.

Is there payment involved?

We receive some donations from our users, but our main source of revenue comes as part of the Acceptable Ads initiative. Larger entities (as defined below) pay a licensing fee for the whitelisting services requested and provided to them (around 90 percent of the licences are granted for free). It should be noted that the Acceptable Ads criteria must be met independent of the consideration for payments. If the criteria are not met, whitelisting is impossible.

Regarding fees, only large entities (those with more than 10 million additional ad impressions per month due to participation in the Acceptable Ads initiative) have to pay. For these entities, our licensing fee normally represents 30 percent of the additional revenue created by whitelisting its acceptable ads.
